Gotong Royong for Sumatra: Public Donations Reach IDR 10.3B

Jakarta, December 3, 2025 — Amid the sorrow caused by the flash floods hitting North Sumatra, Indonesians together with Ferry Irwandi once again prove that gotong-royong (communal solidarity) is more than a slogan — it’s the breath of this nation. People from all over Indonesia poured in waves of support in response to a public fundraising campaign “Help Our Sumatra” on Kitabisa.com.

A Surge of Donations: From 20 Minutes to 24 Hours

The campaign, launched on December 1, 2025, initially set a modest target of IDR 200 million. But within mere hours — public support exploded, making this one of the fastest-growing fundraising drives nationwide this year.

Donation milestones:

  • In the first 20 minutes: IDR 200 million
  • Within 1 hour: reached IDR 1 billion
  • 3 hours later: still around IDR 1 billion
  • During a 3-hour livestream: jumped to IDR 5 billion
  • After 12 hours of live broadcast: soared to IDR 8 billion
  • At the 24-hour mark (1 full day): total donations hit IDR 10.3 billion, contributed by over 87,000 people.

Information about the final tally was also officially confirmed via a post by Ferry Irwandi on social media.

A Commitment to Transparency and Proper Aid Distribution

In a comprehensive video message, Ferry Irwandi emphasized that the funds will be distributed based on principles of:

  • targeted aid (“right target”)
  • transparency — periodic reports will be uploaded publicly
  • accountability — with detailed oversight until the last rupiah

Priority will be given to remote or isolated areas — for example, regions like Tamiang that have not yet received sufficient assistance.

Planned aid items include:

  • basic necessities (food, water, hygiene kits)
  • baby supplies (diapers, baby food)
  • clothing
  • cleaning supplies
  • temporary shelter materials for displaced families
  • equipment to clean mud and debris from affected homes

From Spectators to Actors — Indonesians as Agents of Humanity

The public response came not only from ordinary citizens — but also from digital creators, influencers, small communities, and local organizations. Many used charity livestreams to broaden the fundraising outreach, directing viewers to the “Help Our Sumatra” campaign on Kitabisa.

This phenomenon reflects a new pattern of gotong-royong in our digital age: helping others, even without being physically present in disaster zones.

Solidarity That Doesn’t End with the Campaign

Even though the “Help Our Sumatra” fundraising campaign has officially closed, the spirit of solidarity continues. For those who missed the chance to donate — you can still help by spreading accurate information, following updates on aid distribution, or supporting local communities that are helping recovery efforts.

From Wounds to Collective Action

Amid disasters that took away homes, hopes, and a sense of security — Indonesian society rose up as a healing force. IDR 10.3 billion within 24 hours wasn’t just a number — it was proof that when one region suffers, the whole nation moves. The floods brought tears. But solidarity brought hope. And that hope is now on its way to reaching Sumatra.
